THE WALKABOUT SHOP

The Afghan hawker was a real welcome sight - it was the shop coming to you instead of the other way around - not that we had much in shops out here in those days anyway! (or now for that matter). The sides of this van would fold right out and there would be all this merchandise.
Anything you could get in a department store in those days..cloth, kitchen equipment, canvas, buckets, tools, toys, trinkets and lots more.
He had a base in Adelaide and he'd fill up there. We girls loved to see all this stuff (and the blokes did too, but they didn't let on as much).

Some years ago a bloke came through with three camels and a similar van - just doing his own thing. He came from Broken Hill and stayed here for a few days. He played music and gave kids rides on the camels and in the buggy. It was wonderful.
