Gravel roads & snakes in the house & yard were the norm for the people of Thargo at this time
One time Linda grabbed the shovel to dispense with a snake when her husband shouted to her , “Not the bloody front of the snake come up from bloody behind”.
These & other hardships faced the people at this time

One of the true characters of Thargo is a lady who arrived in Noccundra for a two week holiday in 1973.
During the trip up from Broken Hill in a $40 Ford automatic in which they broke down many times from overheating they were towed many times by my family.
After arriving in Thargomindah she sold the car $200.

 

They settled in Thargo after the 1974 floods when she was expecting her 4th child .Entertainment was what they could find for themselves like swimming in the river, fishing & yabbying etc.

The Dr. said that he wouldn't land again until there was proper lighting for the runway. This was done not long after the almost disaster of the plane hitting the fuel dump.

During one of her pregnancies, the RFDS was called to take her to hospital, at that time the only lights on the runway were supplied by car headlights. After one abortive landing they finally made it onto the ground where they almost took the fuel dump with them before stopping.
  At roughly the same time the old Club Hotel burnt down with a temporary bar placed in the beer garden. The new Bulloo River hotel was built after this,
