Actually there is still a lack of bitumen in this part of the world but back then the blacktop was rarely seen unless you were a couple of days east of here. Getting a loaded truck up a bit of a sand ridge could be a tremendous challenge.

It wasn't enough to just have a driver's licence then if you wanted to take a motor vehicle places you had to be pretty versatile and handy with tools too.
